Is it normal for newborns to have skin rashes?

  • #33482

My newborn has developed a few red spots on their skin. Is it common for babies to have rashes, and how can I tell if it’s something serious?

Yes—newborn skin rashes are very common. Most babies develop benign conditions like erythema toxicum neonatorum (a blotchy red rash with tiny pustules seen in up to 70% of full‑term infants that clears in 1–2 weeks) , as well as milia (tiny white bumps), baby acne, or heat rash that fades when your baby cools down. You should, however, call your pediatrician if a rash lasts more than a few days, comes with a fever (≥100.4 °F), spreads rapidly or shows non‑blanching red spots, oozes or blisters, or if your baby seems unusually sleepy, won’t feed, or has trouble breathing
